Franken-building
03 Dec 2015 10:41
I've been slowly rebuilding a 1983 Kz750 K1 over the last few months. I was given the engine and the frame, that's it. This opened a lot of doors for customization, but it's also making the bill very high for little things. Especially electrical things.
My wife's XS400's engine totally bit the dust last year and I planned to scavenge some parts off of it. My question is how much can I really take off a different bike in terms of wiring harness, relays, ignition components, etc. I know very little about the electrical side of these things so I'm not sure what things to watch for. I just figured since they're both vintage twins, some of it must be compatible!

Wow you must like a good challenge
So you have a full bike without a working motor being the XS400. Is the KZ 750 a full bike? I couldn't tell if it was just a frame with the motor out of it already.
Some pics would really help here.
Getting both wiring diagrams being of good quality so you can really see the color code of the wires will be a must if you plan on splicing these two bikes together? Are they both almost the same length? If you plan on moving the wiring harness from one to the other?
That being said, I would guess that each electrical system could be spliced and or parted to the other bike.

I'd be pretty surprised if anything more than some very minor parts are the same.

I think you need another 83 K1 parts bike to get the many little things you are going to need.

Some good side pics the bike would be a great help. Not too close to the bike and a full view of each side with the seat and tank off. That might help us out a little. Just a thought.

Looking at the avatar I see you're sitting on a HD. Is this going to be a Bobber build?
