I bought a new battery, finally. I started the bike five times. Drove it about 1/4 mile to get air in the tires and shocks. It would not start again, nothing, just a click from the starter relay. Does this mean the starter relay is shot? I checked for continuity and had none.

If you can take a screwdriver or wrench, and bridge(go across the two larger terminals), and the engine cranks over, then yes, the starter relay may have failed internally. Remove the relay, and go to the nearest riding lawn mower shop, comparing what they've got, as there should be some that are a match. You might have to add a ground wire, as some are insulated.

i got a new relay. it still clicks. im not comfortable arcing the relay. is there a simple test concerning the starting button? if not, do i remove the left side cover and can i get to the terminal on the starter solenoid to see it it is corroded??
btw. i think we have the same bike. it was starting fine, and the battery seemed weak, so i replaced it with a CCA 310, which was the best I could find...the battery is new and all i get is a click...i don't want to start taking this apart if there is a simple electrical test. i read the manual, and it speaks about the starter buttons failing (infrequently)...man i want to ride and this is driving me crazy.

That is the correct diagnostic, bridging the contacts will prove your + battery to starter motor connections and your ground -ve loop.
Essentially you are removing the solenoid relay from the circuit.
Clicking relays with no cranking are more often than not a battery lead(s) or frame to battery grounding issue.
