Does the battery go dead after a few hours?

Yes, ignition switch controls head, tail and ignition circuits. easy to miswire or find a pattern switch with the wrong configuration. Look at the box at the bottom of the wiring diagram, it has a truth table that shows the connections between circuits.

Ignore the one I posted, just an example -find the correct diagram for your bike. In this example, note the battery is connected to the ignition and headlight only when ignition switch is in the 'on' position.
Was it doing this before the relay mod?

jackleberry wrote: You say you did the coil mod... It sounds like the relay you used has failed in the closed position or a couple of the wires have shorted together. Try a new relay.
Please let us knowwhat you find but I would bet on this being the problem. Shorted relay or wired incorrectly. Your ignition circuit is live all the time. Like being "hotwired "

I did not see in the original post that you've operating the bike for months after the relay mod!
In the future try to put more info about when mods were done or how long ago vs when something went wrong. LOL!

New 750 wrote: I put a four pin relay from my minivan in its place and it worked fine, I bought the proper amperage unit per a write up on here, the only thing I can think of it it's exposed to water from time to time, but I would think it should last more then a few months? I was also under the impression that my coils could be fried from constant juice, (assuming the points are closed when shut off) thanks alot for the input, just solved two nagging problems, can't believe I did not check the relay.
You can get 40A relays on ebay dirt cheap these days that are, somewhat surprisingly, sealed with epoxy to keep out the elements. You can do this yourself if you get one that not sealed already.
