Im into the new school of electronic ignition.

The systems are just so cheap now its hard not to for me. I even went with a fancy dyna 2000 system will bells and whistles ill never use..... but it was a breeze to install and never looking back. Think i spend about $300 and that included coils..... Haven't had any charging issues on my 80 kz1000

The charging issues are only related to the Dyna S and Dyna III due to their extended dwell. The dwell-controlled, higher-level Dyna units should not hurt charging, and may actually be a little more efficient than the factory electronic system.

On my 78 with the Dyna 3 I've never had a hint of a charge problem. On my 77 with the old 77 system and a Dyna S also no problem. Another 77 with a 1978 charge system adapted, charging is low, but not a problem. All in all I've done well over 200,000 miles on KZ650s with Dyna systems and had one failure, which Dyna replaced under warranty. How many problems would I have had in 200,000 miles using points? About 200 :) I don't do points. Learned that way back in 1979 after 1yr of them things.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Yes, most KZ's won't have a problem, but over the last 15 years, for whatever reason, whenever there is a mysterious low charging KZ running a Dyna S on the forum, it is far more often a 78 or 79 Kz650 than any other KZ. Meanwhile many 78 and 79 Kz650's run fine with Dyna S ignitions. I suspect there was a batch of flywheels or stators that went onto the 78/79 Kz650's which had very little extra capacity, but could otherwise run the stock ignition just fine. (And, of course, this extends to other KZ650's where an engine swap or alternator swap may have occurred. Basically any Kz650 with a 1-phase, permanent magnet alternator, is in this group, but most of them will be fine.)

Converting the 1-phase 78/79 Kz650 to a later 3-phase stator and reg/rec usually fixes the problem immediately.

I just got the bike running after my piston swap. I noticed the Dyna S rotor is loose. It was late so I didn't look closley at it but I have a feeling I'll be running my points until I can get a replacement. Anyone have a link to Dyna?

Never really had a charging problem on my single phase set up either and ran a Dyna S close to forever......... and I swear about every ride when I had the points (3 years or so) I would get a picture in my head of them wearing in and getting slightly outta time..... crazy I know but was part of the reason I switched....hotter spark and set it and forget it other reasons.
