That doesn't make much sense. You need a 12v DC supply at a few amps just run the two ignition coils.
It might take a few Farads just get a few moments of energy through a 3-4 ohm coil and points to ground.

Why? The battery acts as a sort of shock absorber for the electrical system. Even if you kick start the thing, the lights still need the battery.

You're right about the battery acting as a 'shock absorber' - but you don't need a battery if you have a battery eliminator, which is what OP is asking about. A Battery eliminator is an equivalent to a battery - it has high capacitance and low resistance. I.E. it's a capacitor.

The biggest difference between a battery and a capacitor is that a battery is designed to hold charge and keep the voltage consistent when discharging. Capacitors will not hold as much charge, and their voltage will drop quickly, but they can provide a large amount of current in that time.

Capacitors are also good at smoothing out voltage, which is what you want. This is also why you never disconnect a battery from a running vehicle - you can get big voltage spikes, which can be particularly bad for modern electronics. The big problem here is that you will need a really big capacitor to match the equivalent capacitance of the battery.

It can be done, but only if your current electrical system is up to it. The battery does very little apart from acting as a capacitor once the bike is running - unless you electronics are old and a bit worn (quite likely!) and you turn on your headlight at idle.

Do a search for battery eliminators - you can get them, they're just a big capacitor. But they'll perform no better than a tiny battery in the best case scenario.

Yes and no. Some KZ models must have a battery. As an example, the 1977 KZ650 models have a field coil type generator that won't work without a battery or with a weak battery. This may not be true of the '78 KZ1000 though. Ed

Searched: bare bones & loudhvx. KZRider topic --- 1980 750H bare bones for mattylight --- pg 19
Not specific to the kz1000 but at least one of the diagrams shows a capacitor.
There may be a relevant diagram in the topic somewhere.

Other possible search terms: battery eliminator, capacitor, batteryless, kz1000

That was popular in the 70's, when Honda SOHC 750's and the Z1's were built in to choppers. "The Battery Eliminator"
They had sold them and had articles in "Hot Bike & Street Chopper" magazines.
Livin in "CheektaVegas, NY
Went thru 25 of these in 40 yrs.

One of the new high tech batteries (non-lead/acid) might be just right and might be just as easy to hide as a large capacitor., seems like there are some discussion threads about lithium ion and such.

Why would you want to get rid of your battery?

The Shorai lithium/ion battery is about the size of a pack of cigaretts , and is completely sealed, and can be mounted in any position, sideways, upside down, etc.etc., but they are a bit pricey, about 150.00
