New Coils for my KZ305
15 Jul 2015 16:25
Can anyone confirm that these Dyna 3 Ohm mini coils will be ok on my KZ305?
I think they will be fine but wasn't sure because of the warning in the text that I didn't fully understand, well I don't know what the resistance is of my ignition system.
The output is 11.5 kohms
Here is the info from my manual
Cheers

The reason I'm looking for coils is my left cylinder is no longer firing. I figured a shot coil could be the problem. When I shove a screw driver up the lead it will arc across to the engine perfectly so it's probably not the coil.

Then I thought maybe the battery was low on charge and not giving enough grunt for a decent spark. I've changed it, it cranks over better but lefty still won't fire.

So I'm thinking... What else has changed to cause this? I changed the spark plug lead on the left side. So why did I do that? Hmmm, well because I was getting a miss on the left side on Monday morning. So what had changed before that?

On Saturday morning I re did my valve clearances. The right side was fine but the left side had like 2-3mm gaps! When I did them I had two feeler gauges within spec on the intake side and I went with the smaller of the two. The bike actually ran ok with the loose tappets. The plugs always looked lean to me. Pure white on the tips and grey down at the base. Now the plug on the left is shiny black. I'm sure that's partly due to it not firing. I'm thinking some how the valve clearances are too tight and it's causing the plug to foul and now not spark. I'm pretty sure I have some old plugs that I might throw in to see if they fire. Then I'll do the valve clearances again. Here endeth my self diagnosis. ✌

Does your bike have points ignition? If so, the primary resistance on the mini-coils might be too low. not sure. ???
Z1Ent lists a set of Dyna 5.0 ohm single output coils that might be more suitable. ???
I would contact Dynatek.

Yeah maybe you are on to something.
If one of the valves is not closing all the way, due to too tight of setting... the compression will be awful and that cylinder will not fire correctly... it could cause the plug to foul within just a few mins of cold engine, with choke starting/running.
Shiny black implies oil or SUPER rich condition to me.

I should have re read this this morning. With my old plugs in it fired right up. The other one were fouled alright but not because of the valve clearances. I had adjusted the carbs Way too rich at 3.5 turns out. They fouled within a couple of hours riding to the point where they just wouldn't spark any more. Back at 2.5 turns out now and I'll throw in a fresh set of plugs in the morning. We live and learn!
