You'll need to change the primary(small wires) side connection from push on to ring style terminals. The original wiring was maybe 22-18 gauge, so the RED insulation ring terminals should work, just make sure the proper terminal crimper is used. Avoid any solder on these terminals, as it will "wick" up inside the wire insulation, making it stiff, and prone to breakage from vibration.

I've heard you can run the 3 ohm coils with points.
They will sink a lot of current though....
Until I get time to exchange my points plate with my new Dyna S... I am still running my standard points with the green Dyna coils.
However, I am also running a home made ballast resistor in series with the 12v to the two coils. It is 1.8 ohms @ 100 watts and gets amazingly warm for what it is!!
Yet it works perfectly.

Whatever you do, if using Dyna S, make it an unbreakable habit that the kill switch is ALWAYS off unless running.

Leaving the ignition switch on by mistake can cook the expensive coils I've done it a couple of times by mistake and got lucky, but they did get really hot.

I tried to start my new, old, 78 kz650 the other day, and it didn't start. What a let down. I discovered there was no spark at the plugs. I decided I needed to check the coils to see if there were any problems there, and sure enough, one of the coils is junk. The bike has set for over 15 years in a barn, so this really doesn't surprise me.

So I got my nice green used Dyna coils out that I recently acquired, and gave them a quick check. One of them is junk as well........

My last hope was a set of coils I got off of an 82 kz650 electronic ignition bike. They both checked out OK !!

But I'm betting I cannot use these on my points ignition bike, can I ?? They checked out at 2.6 and 12.6, where the original, good coil from the points bike checks out at 4.5 and 15.5.

What a pain !!

Can someone please tell me what bike would be a good choice, to get a used set of coils from, that would work on this 78 points bike ?? Preferably a bike that's a lot newer than mine......

Unfortunately, there is likely no coil on a new bike that can just be swapped into a Kz650 points ignition. The emgo 4 ohm coils are the best bet if you want to save money. They are hard to find in stock, but someone may have a link handy. There are also no-name brand ones similar to the Emgo's.

i think I saw some available for about $40 or even less, each.
