GPz750 R1 charging problems
09 May 2015 19:48 - 09 May 2015 19:59
I've been sorting out my GPz750 R1 and discovered a charging fault. I'm posting it here if it is any use to other members.
The bike was used very rarely and only a few short journeys only, the battery was shared with another bike so I hadn't noticed it.
Firstly I put a voltmeter across the battery and was getting nothing above battery volts even with it revved up past 4k rpm...definite problem needs investigation.
First thing I noticed was a wire on the regulator/rectifier unit block connector that had gone awol.
Result! problem found... Just remove the old conector in the block and crimpa new terminal on the red/white. Note tool used to extract the pins out of the connector - a small screwdriver works too.
I thought that would fix it...unfortunately not.
Checking the three yellow output wires for resistance between each other and I'm getting open circuit - it should be less than 1 Ohm. Pulling the left hand alternator stator cover off and one mangled bolt drops out.
Which has trashed the stator
the rotor was undamaged, but that stator is shafted.
totally stuffed
Ok so new stator time. Can't easily find one for a GPz750R1 but managed to get one from a GT750 shaft drive. Just ran a tap through the threads of the casing which were blocked up.
Then new m6 bolts with threadlock -don't want this stator going the same way as the last
Getting a decent resistance reading now between all the three output tails
and getting well over battery voltage with engine running
and at 4000 rpm getting around 14.5 volts.
Sorted for a £10 used stator from ebay and one crimp terminal . Result !
