I'm running a kick only 12v 1.3ah battery, and after it runs for a bit, it doesnt want to start back up. I'm guessing its charging related. I hooked up the stock battery, and measure the voltage and got a reading of 11.88 even when I rev the engine. I put 4000 miles on this bike last Summer and never had issues so I'm a bit miffed, but here I am.

I was looking for a new stator, but it doesn't look like anyone really carries one. The 1980 uses a 2-wire yellow stator and reg/rec combo. I'm guessing there might be a 3 wire i can upgrade to? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Wait, I can write anything here?

Considering you are using a 1.3ah battery I'm surprised it even runs. That model takes a 12ah battery.

Was the "stock" battery you installed known to be in excellent condition and fully charged?

What led you to believe you have a problem with the stator? The fact that you only see 11.88 volts even at high rpm does not indicate that the stator is bad. Have you tested the regulator/rectifier? It's more likely that unit is the problem rather than the stator, but without testing it you cannot tell.

Don't be miffed. Just get the Kawasaki Service Manual, run the appropriate tests, and replace the component that is at fault. BUT, I wouldn't waste my time and energy try to diagnose the problem unless you install the correct battery at least for the tests. Ed

I guess I should have gave a little more background. Im running kick only, no signals, just taillight and headlight. The normal stock battery I used was charged. I kind of thought the reg/rec was my initial issue, but its hard to find a replacement with the 750g wire setup(2 yellow, 1 brown, 1 black, 1 white/red).

Did the bike ever run for an extended period with the tiny battery? You say you charged the battery, but was it tested to verify that it is good? The bike needs a good, fully charged battery to run right as it provides the energy to fire the coils. I have no idea if the little battery is sufficient for the job. Some guys use a capacitor in place of the battery when going kicker only, but I think the headlight must be off to start.

R/R: From the diagrams at Partzilla I think your voltage regulator is the same as the 1980-on 750-Twins & 440s. Search eebbaayy for KZ750 Ltd or KZ440 regulator.
Rick's electric or Oregon Motorcycle probably have something.

It doesn't matter that the regulator/rectifier is hard to find. If that is the malfunctioning piece replacing the stator isn't going to fix the problem.

Again, you should test the charging system components to identify which piece is the problem. Otherwise you will spend money and time and may still not have a charging system that works. That would lead to a lot of frustration.

If after testing the components you find that the regulator/rectifier is the problem contact the folks at the link below for a replacement. They build great components; I've been using one of their rectifiers for years and it is perfect. Ed

Looking at the reg/rec at Oregon Motorcycles, none of them have the brown wire my stock unit has. Should I be worried about that?

You should contact them ( sales@OregonMotorcycleParts.com ). They are very easy to work with and they are extremely knowledgeable about motorcycle charging systems. Ed

Electrosport.com sells one for your bike.
Part #ESR600 It comes with a warranty and is only $79. They also have a great electrical trouble shooting flow chart on their Web site.

Yes, it does look like Electrosport electrical components are made in China, so why is that important. My smart phone, all 4 of the TV sets in my house, and the 3 computers we have are all made in China.
