LED turn signals
01 Mar 2015 18:06
Hey guys! hope you all are having a nice Sunday. I had a quick question regarding LED turn signals. I have read that in order to run LED turn signals you have to put a resistor in line with the power wire of the light to work. And i have also read to just change the flasher unit to a electronic unit. i'm currently running a TRIDON 552 12v - 32CP. would really appreciate the advice. Thanks for your time gents!

Electronic flasher is what you need. If you use a standard flasher, you have to put a resistor to ground (not in series) to supply extra loading current. That's a waste of heat and current.

With that Tridon 552 flasher the LED bulbs should work fine. Ed

Thanks for the advice guys. The resistors that I was looking at were the 6 ohm resistors. Would this be the one to use? Would you just wire the leds ground thought the resistor to the bike ground (yellow/black cable)?

Also Ed, would you recommend changing both relays. It seems they are both tridon. Would an electronic flasher work better?

The Tridon 552 flasher IS an electronic relay; at least the one I have been using for the past 10 years is. You should be fine with what you already have. You should not need to change the relays or add a resistor. Ed

I noticed that when I put in the led blinker the dash signal direction light is very dim. But when I tried the regular incandescent blinker it was right back to normal brightness.

The relay with two orange/green wires is probably the hazard flasher relay
The relay with an orange wire and a brown wire is probably the turn signal relay.
As either relay controls the flashing of LED lights, both relays should be the electronic variety.
Good Fortune!

Is also this the case when you turn on the hazard lights with LED's in place? Ed

When I switched to fully leds I had a few issues. The relays I had didn't seem to work correctly, even the ones supposed to be for LED's. Luckily I found a three pin one that worked if I ran the extra cable to earth.
This is the one that worked for me

Update time. I got a new electronic relay. The left rear led turn signal works but the right rear signal stays on. I'm at a loss the problem also exists on the front end as well. Left sig works but right stays in. Bad ground?
