Kz1000p No Spark but Randomly Starts
01 Feb 2015 08:18
After 3 months of riding this bike I am not getting spark from any of the plugs. The odd thing is the bike will randomly start like nothing was ever wrong. the idle is a little off but other than that once its on it runs as good as it did before. The problem got worse and I haven't been able to start it of late. I checked the power to the coils and I get nothing. I'm assuming the problem lies within either the IC ignitor. I should mention the starter is spinning the engine with no issue at all. Before i go out buying a part i want to get some more experienced opinions.

i would look at the manuel and trace the electrical leading to the coils.
could be a simple bad connection.

Unscrew the sparkplug caps from the sparkplug wire(or high tension leads). Using a multimeter, test the 5000 ohm resistor inside the caps, as heat, vibration, and just age, will cause them to fail. New ones are usually available at the local Japanese motorcycle shops, or at

You also need to check the condition of the soldered joints inside the left and right "Switch pods" on the handlebars, as there has been reports of this factory job, was marginal at best. Look inside the headlight housing too, as a majority of the main harness electrical connectors, are there.

These bikes need a good battery with a full charge to start the stock ignition system. If your battery is not perfect, replace it for $40.

. I checked the power to the coils and I get nothing.
That's your problem, intermittent open circuit on ignition live feed to coils. The IC ignitor grounds the coils every time they need to spark , the live permanently feeds the coils and ignitor box when ignition is on..
Easy no tool method : Get it running, then wiggle the wiring loom. particularly around the ignition switch and RH switchgear engine run/off/run switch - if you can make it cut out that will help you trace the area of the problem.
You should have a separate fuse for the ignition on that 1000P, check you have power there.
Don't try throwing money at this with new IC ignitor, coils etc...your problem is a no power supply to ignition.
These do like a decent battery charge for starting, and I'd agree - but the 'intermittent' nature of this suggests a wiring fault.
