Regulator/Rectifier
17 Dec 2014 14:15
I've noticed on my bike I have a separate regulator and rectifier, unlike my bikes in the past where this has always been a single unit. I see z1 enterprises has a unit that says it fits, and appears to be a one piece deal. Would this just require rewiring things into one single plug and being done with it? Link provided below

Something is amiss. The 1983 KZ650 came with a combination rectifier/regulator. Can you provide a picture of what you have and a picture of the left side of the engine (where the generator is)? Also, what is the engine serial number on your bike? Is it possible someone swapped engines with one from an older KZ650? Ed

If you need a new R/R the best type to get is a "series" R/R. These units employ newer technology that protects your stator from burning out as a result of current being shunted back into the stator leading to over heat. The SHINDENGEN SH-775 is becoming a very popular choice. Polaris sells these units for cheaper than the typical shunt type Chinese R/R's sold in the aftermarket. Check this thread over at GSR for more info including where to get the unit and a matching harness..

As 650ed suggested, your bike should have a voltage regulator/rectifier combo --->>> bolted to the underside of the battery case. It may be that the other thing you're seeing is the Igniter.
If your reg-rec is shot, you can install one from a Ninja 500 or Vulcan 500 (credit to loudhvx).
For my 81 KZ650-CSR, I got one from a low mileage 2007 Ninja 500 ($25). The connector was opposite from the stock R/R, so I had to change out the terminal pins & connector.

What. A . N00b.
I saw the ignitor, and mistook it for something else. It was a very long day of huffing carb cleaner.
Anywho, I'll just be tucking both of those away for now and getting back to this mangled fuse box., Side note: if I'm not running turn signals, would I be ok with removing these flashers?

Blade fuses. Since your fuse box is messed up, now would be a good time to convert to modern blade fuses. Here's a topic.
KZRider --- Best Fuse box upgrade
Kawasaki factory service manual: if you need a manual, the 81-82 version is usually available on eebbaayy & typically reasonably priced, if not cheap. Get one of those, then from the following topic save the supplement page for the 83 model. The 81-83 manual doesn't have a wiring diagram for the H3, so it may be the same as the H2. KZ650.Info --- See pg 4

Would this fuse holder work? Looks like it would be great to clean up and hide the wiring.

Is it waterproof & is there a way to secure the cover?
That one looks similar to the CSW fuse box in that KZR topic linked above.

It'll be mounted in a small tray under the seat pan, side covers are long gone.
