Battery Shenanigans

Just got a new battery from the local shop. Charged it up, and as soon as I put the contacts on, it started to fry the cluster by the blinker switch (see photo). Everything was totally off, no key in the ignition. It was only in for a second or two, but enough to get the wires smoking.

So, what the hell happened? It didn't happen with my previous battery, and I've had luck getting the bike started with that one before...

12v, 220 cca, any other info that would be helpful?

Did you connect the battery cables to the correct (+ and -) terminals on the battery? Ed
