Um, only use the kick starter? :blush: .... If the bike doesn't have a headlight ON/OFF switch, I would add one, so that you can turn off the headlight when starting. New, good battery.
Make sure there's good compression and the valve clearances are checked & within spec.
Kick starter or not, I would go through the bike methodically w a fine toothed comb to make sure everything is working right, checked & set as per the factory manual: good battery & the charging system is working correctly; the fuel system is clean & in good working order; the ignition system is good. A lot of that stuff is easy & hopefully most of it will already be spot on. Check one thing, double check your work, then move on to the next.
