battery not charging

so my car took a shit so i need to get the KZ650 (78 d1a) on the road till i fix my car.
since i got the bike ive noticed the battery isnt being charged . i rode it last week after i cleaned out the carbs (battery was on a tender before that). then on saturday after cleaning the bike , i installed the batter and took it for a spin. rode it for maybe 15-20 minutes. stopped about 2 blockes from my house and turned it off for about 2 minutes. came back tried to start it and nothing . not even with the kick start. i know i need a service manual but i havent found one yet. how can i test the charging system and regulator rectifier? it does have a custom harness and a gel battery.

yes it has stock points and look fairly new about 6-7 months

Sorry, but I haven't found an electronic copy for the 1978 models, and the '77 and '81 models have different charging systems. There are some KZ650-D1A manuals on eBay. Ed
