77' kz650 electrical issues please help was created by Scubagli
I picked up this bike for a song, that being said I have no experience with them. The bike is not charging, I'm trying to figure out what exactly has been done to it as it has a single r/r unit on it.
That is the r/r on the bike, here is a pic of the wiring from the stator
Here are the coils
I would love some insight if anyone recognizes these parts and can tell me if they can work on this bike...I'm not sure I had my multi meter on the correct setting to test the stator (200acv) when I did it was only producing 1-1.9v at all three yellow wires. I'm wondering if it is wired wrong, the green wire should be keyed 12v if I am not mistaken. On a side note I've gone thur 1/2 the harness and found 4 shorts so far... This harness is a mess. Right now I am just trying to get the system operational, this winter I plan to tear the whole bike down and chop it simplify the wiring and dial everything in. Any help would be appreciated!

The 1977 KZ650 models came with separate regulators and rectifiers. If your bike has a combo unit a previous owner has screwed around with the charging system, so there's no telling what he may have done or if he installed parts that will work with the 3-phase excited field generator. I like stock configurations, even if not original parts, so if it was mine I would use the KZ650 B1/C1 wiring diagram, buy the correct parts, and put it back to a configuration that I knew for sure should work. If at that point is still didn't charge it would be very easy to diagnose the problem using the tests in the Kawasaki Service Manual. Ed

The 3 yellow wires you show in one of your pics would indicate to me that your bike is a 3 phase system. As Ed indicted the 77 650s came stock with a 3 phase excited field system. They had a separate rectifier and regulator. The rectifier converts the AC created by the alternator into DC and the regulator either increases of decreases the amount provided to the field depending upon the current entire system load.
The alternator will not create any power unless the field is excited, via the regulator.

Thanks, I didn't know the regulator excited the field. Anyone have pictures of the stock components?

So I'm going to build my own rectifier using this
The original regulator is still on the bike, hopefully this will fix the charging issue.

I put a jumper from the OE regulator to the stator, field excited and seems to be charging properly, 12.8v at idle and around 14.6 at 4krpms. Still going to build a rectifier and install.
