wiring tach
04 Jun 2014 19:48
ive been looking for a hint on how to wire in a tack to a 97 kz1000. ive found pictures of wiring to the coil, but thats when i got a little lost..do i need to wire it to both coils or just one.
from my basic understanding i run a wire from coil or coils to tack and ground the tack and that should have it working right??
i appreciate the help.

As far as I know you only need to run the wire to 1 coil. At least the one I hooked up, that's the way I did it.

without having another tach to compare it to I would say its pretty accurate. Its not on the bike I have now so I have no way to test it again. Most tachs will tell you how to hook it up and a way to change them for 4 6 8 cylinders.

It's a tach off a 92 gsxr 750. I swapped the front suspension and that's what I have for now.. Gonna buy a new tach when I have the cash..
I believe it's has 4 wires..

Would think that electronic tach receives input from the primary terminal on either ignition coil, meaning the primary terminal that also has the signal wire from the ignition pick-up module (not the primary terminal connected to battery+ that's usually a red or red/yellow wire).

It doesn't matter which coil you attach it to just as long as it is not attached to the 12 volt signal wire.
However your 83 should have come with an electronic tach from Kawasaki. That tach wire should be under the headlight bucket and is black. Most likely one of your coil wires is going to be black also. That is the wire the factory tapped into the tach signal for the stock tach. If you find it under the buckt just plug your new tach signal lead to that one.
