Difference between starter motors
30 Apr 2014 17:59
My bike is a 1983 Spectre, (KZ750 N2). Unfortunately, when I bought it, it came complete with a burnt out starter motor. I don't think there's any rebuilding of this sucker, everything inside looks pretty much melted. Problem is, where on earth do I get a new starter? There are a few on ebay, but looking at Partzilla's Kawasaki parts interchange information, it looks like the 1983 Spectre 750 takes a 21163-1025 starter motor. The only other models with this motor were the 1982 Spectre and the 1983 LTD Shaft. Most of the other KZ750s from this era seem to take a 21163-1190 motor. Are the differences between these two motors real? Or is it one of those cases where they painted it a different color and gave it a new part number to match? Any suggestions?

From what I recall, and it's been a while...Is that the earlier Z-1 type starters will fit the later "J" type engines. The weak part was always the starter clutches and not the starter. (but yours is melted) The very early motors had the wires as part of the assembly and a little later on they had the wire held on with a stud and nut. I seem to remember swapping them out without issue.

O.P. has a 750 not a 1000.
Any KZ650 or KZ750 starter will work.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a shot. Worst case I'm out $75 and have to keep looking. I wasn't sure whether the shaft drive placed some unusual demands on the starter or something. (I'm a clueless newb and have zero experience working on these bikes.)

I put an early 2000's Zr7 starter in my '83 Gpz750. No issues yet. Plus it's newer and has less wear on it.
