Bad odometer

Noticed today that my odometer on my KZ550 ('82) wasn't working. The speedometer was fine, I replaced that cable about 2 months ago.

So I get home and open the gauge up. The horizontal metal gear bit was stripped pretty badly. Lots of tiny metal bits in there. The stripped metal didn't look terribly fresh, so I figure this has been going on for a bit and it just now reached the failure point.

Now I'm wondering if there is some super-secret technique to repair the horizontal gear or am I in the "need a new speedometer" boat?

If I need a replacement, I wonder if I can get one that reads a little higher than 85mph (not that I'd ever go that fast...)

Thanks all for your insights.

I am sure someone will give you a answer. I don't know if another earlier speedo that goes past 85 will work on your bike so I will just bump this up to the top of the discussion.

Updaaaaaaate!

I ended up fixing my odometer with a donor gear from a parts bike.
I created a photo gallery and uploaded it on imgur. I hope you all find it useful/informative. Feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks for taking the time to post that. Very useful as I plan to do something similar on a tach in the next couple of months
Thanks
