Need your experience on rebuilding a starter was created by Really its a KZ650
Been gone for awhile, Nice to see this site has been here all that time.

So here's the problem, my starter is going, It's brushes were taken out by a pro-mechanic, he said it should be rebuild or replace, Replacing the bad boy is going to cost 300. and some change, I check on the net., I found a place but they want to sell me a refurbished one for 250.oo , they said after I sent them the cash they would send me a rebooted one, then I can Pay for the returning of my old starter and they would give me 50.bucks for it.

the mechanic cleaned it up n & put it back in so I would be able to get it home- gosh I wish they still made them with a kick start, btw it was working but from time to time it struggled, It never left me stranded though, I was thinking of rebuilding it myself and try to save some money, I really like this bike, do you believe I get thumbs up from Harley riders. the bike is a 15,000mile 83 CSR650, IT is a utter BLAST to ride, and surprised many owners of a certain 700cc Honda of that era, I ride with them from time to time.

I also look on the net for a rebuild Kit for it but had no luck, any thought would be great.

Try here at z1 enterprises: www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?i...sh+Kit&item=RI70-502
Email them, or call them to confirm fitment.
Describing the problem may help. Have you tested your battery? How old is it? Also it could be a battery cable issue, bad connection at either the + or - cable, ground to engine block etc.

I'm trusting the Mechanic on the reason for the rebuilding of starter. Is this rebuilding stuff hard, have either of you done one, I will check into today thanks for the response so quickly.

I rebuilt the starter on my 79 kz750. It was not difficult. I'm not sure how different the later 650 would be. The rebuild kits above mostly look like they just contain brushes which should be a pretty easy job if that's all your starter needs.

Do you have a shop manual? Study the diagrams and take it apart. Worst that can happen is that you send a box of parts to your rebuilder if you can't get it back together. Go for it!

Permanent and perpetual noob.

Before opening up the starter scribe a "Whitness Mark" across the major housing parts. This is to ensure they will line up for re-assembly. A majic marker might work. could be rubbed off during cleaning.
