Regulator/Rectifier install question was created by daless
Got a new reg/rec from Z1E (part # PM81-4081). Went to install it and ran into some confusion. The black wire on the old regulator has a bullet connector and was plugged into this black/yellow wire of the main harness:

The black wire on the new reg/rec has this ring connector, which the instructions say to attach to the engine ground behind the kickstart:

To reach the engine ground and green connector plug at once I'd have to slit the rubber casing on the reg/rec wires and separate the black one from the rest. Should I do this, or replace the ring with a bullet and plug it into the female black/yellow that the old regulator went to? And if the former, does that black/yellow end just get taped over?

I installed the same one. Here is the way I did it.

The white goes to fuse box.

The black and yellow is ground. You may need to install a new connector and extend the wire to make this one work.

I mounted the reg/ref on the right side. This solved the wire length problems

You don't have to slit the black tube. Clip off the end of black wire, pull it though the sheaf. It will be on the right side now to attach to neg bolt. The wire will be to long, so trim and install a new eye round connector. solider it, don't use a clip connection.

I attached it to the negative screw on the right side of engine case where the negative battery cable attaches. Now connect it to battery nut behind kick start.

Now you can run the plug and white wire across and plug in. Again the white wire is to the fuse box.

Never ground the reg/ref to a harness ground. It must be grounded to the engine ground bolt.

Your done.

I see. So just to be sure, the black/yellow female from the harness will stay empty?

Ok, the solid black wire that is attached to combo unit.....connect it behind the kick start on the negative bolt only, not the yellow black.....make that connection were you had it before....

So just out of curiosity, it's okay for a regulator to be connected to the harness ground, as mine was, but not a combo unit?

Cant answer that as I never had one, always had a combo unit.

My intuition: It should be a chassis ground.
