Switching sparkplug wires

27 Jan 2014 15:56

I feel like this is a dumb question but you never know. Is there a specific side for where each spark plug wire goes to? Like one wire has to go left and the other has to go to the right on a kz750 twin. My bike backfired through the carburetor and Im wondering if Switching the plugs sides would throw off timing ect.

Thanks,
Schmeck

Makes no diff. Both plugs fire at the same time, one on compression, the other on exhaust, the visa versa.

Check your sparkplug caps, if they're what came with the bike, think about getting new ones. The 5000 ohm internal resistor can fail/become intermittent, due to heat, vibration, and age. Z1 enterprises sells new ones.

If you remove the timing advancer cam/rotor, it is easy to install it 180 off and it will backfire through the carbs when you try to start it. Most 750 twin owners here have done that at least once (including me).

Yeah I am not sure what is causing it . I think it's my plug caps but will check timing advancer. I'm have a 2 into 1 intake but it ran fine so I don't think it's that . Am going to redo my wiring anyways and will replace plug caps and check advancer . thanks

Okay so if the timing advancer lobe was backwards the gap would close when the plate is turned to the right correct? I am all of a sudden confused.

Take a close look at the outer edge of the little cam on your timing advancer. If it is marked similar to that of my KZ650 you will see a short line stamped into it (see my advancer in photo below for details). If that is there, take a look at the backplate portion of the advancer. Again, if it is similar to my KZ650, you will see a small round hole in it. The little cam should be installed on the shaft so the little line on the cam is near the little hole in the backplate. If the line is 180 degrees away from the little hole, the little cam is on the shaft 180 degrees out and needs to be pulled off, turned 180 degrees, and re-installed. It can only be installed one of those 2 ways - it's either correct or 180 degrees off. Ed

I checked my advancer and it is on correctly. Reset the timing for .014" and all that. I even set my engine on F and turned it alittle while looking into the intake holes. No bent or leaking valves. I had the valves serviced a few months ago so I know its not them. Im going to say its either my bikes wiring or sparkplug caps. If this is true the bike will run good when I make the new wiring harness and put new plug caps on.
