Plug wires 73 z1 was created by Arob0606
My father in law recently gave me a 73 kz 900 z1. I am wanting to replace the plug wires and do know how they come out. Are they like the caps and twist off or are they just a pull type. To get them out of the coils that is.

The coils on this bike may not have replaceable wires, which may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. These older coils are a known weak point with this engine, so it might be a good time to replace the coils and wires. Dyna sells a direct bolt-in set and all the rest of the coil manufacturers sell dual tower coils that will work. IIRC, your coils are 5-ohm coils, and are very easy to find. Getting new plug wires and caps at the same time give you the opportunity to make a style statement (colors, etc.)

Now, if someone has already replaced the OEM coils with new ones, you will need to look for a screw-on compression cap holding the wire in place. This should twist off - gently, though. The plastic will be brittle and if you break it, you need a new coil.

No they are definitely the original coils. It runs fine, or seemed to, but someone had put the light up plug ends on it and I broke one off, so I was just going to replace the wires all together for now. But yes in the future new coils are on the list, along with many others.but thanks for the reply. And new to the forums by the way.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationYou may or may not be aware, but your father-in-law gave you a valuable bike! The 1973 Z1 is a collector's item.

Why do you want to replace the wires; are they visibly damaged? If so, and if you really must replace them but don't want to replace the coils there are spark plug wires splicer kits by NGK that could be used. However, if the wires are not visibly shot I wouldn't do it. I don't know if you are aware of the fact that the 1973 Z1 is a collectable, high dollar value bike and that pretty much every stock part from a 1973 Z1 has value to folks restoring them. In short, this means DON'T THROW ANY ORIGINAL PARTS AWAY or cut on them. If you are not interested in restoring the bike and want to replace the wires / coils I agree with Cynjut's suggestion to buy new and sell the old (unless they are really whipped).

What shape is the bike in? Does it have the original exhaust system, paint, and other stuff, or has it been cut on or otherwise modified? The reason I ask is that if it is whole (original motor for example) and if you don't have an interest in restoring it you may want to consider selling it and using the money to buy a new bike. Please post pictures of it so we can see it. Here's a really nice example that sold on eBay, but even ones that are in rough shape still have good value. Ed

And yes ED i am somewhat aware of the value, however my inlaws like most can be a little funny. He gave me the bike like he did not want anything to do with it and when I painted it black cherry, he kinda was upset I did not paint it back factory(shit brown). So with him saying that I think selling it would go over like a fart in church. But i am a pack rat anyway, especially if it was free. Maybe down the road he will forget about it.
