Back to 79MKII's problem. You mention in the OP that you think you remember checking spark when cranking the starter. Have you double checked?

This problem seems really odd to me. If it's the coils, I wouldn't think you'd be able to kick start it. I'm leaning towards bad battery.

You're sure it's turning the motor over when you push the start button?

I'm about 98% sure we checked the spark but it will be the first thing I check when we get together again. And yes, the motor is turning over for sure. When he first explained the problem to me, I figured it was a bad starter and he didn't realize that the motor wasn't turning over. but it is, and it turns over pretty strongly too. I've got a lot of things to check now thanks to you guys. I"m anxious to get back over there but not sure when we'll work in it again.

No voltage drop when using the kickstarter, so if the coil is old and weak, the voltage drop during electric start could be to much for the coil.
