Oil pressure light
12 Jan 2014 18:10
Sometimes the oil pressure light comes on when I am going thru the gears. When I notice it I stop for a couple of seconds and it goes off. Should I worry about ? It is a 76 kz900 with 1075, 3x cams, big time head work, back cut gears, blue printed motor, welded crank and racing clutch. Oh yah motor is fresh only 600 miles.

Could be a bad sensor? Are you running a cooler? You could get a pressure guage to verify that oil pressure is dropping off.

Sounds like the oil is getting pushed to the rear of oil pan......could be oil starved. How are you checking oil, do have the bike straight, kick stand or center stand?
Like Powerstroke_fan was hinting at : If you have a cooler, you need to add oil for the amount displaced by the cooler system.

Are you just going through the gears easy or are you hitting it hard? On these bikes if you are hitting it sorta hard and running through the gears, the oil will tend to run to the rear of the oil pan from the acceleration. There is a gate that you can install in the pan that will keep the oil up at the oil pump to keep that from happening. Onece you stop or slow down enough, the oild will go back to level and the oild pump will get oil again.

Check the cam bearings. If they're damaged, they'll bleed off pressure quickly. Just pull off the #1 cap and look for blue and gouges. It's a really tough motor and runs on very little oil pressure, however, the light comes on at ZERO oil pressure.
