I like the GPz gauges on my 84 550. I was wanting to buy a set to put on my 78 KZ1000. Streetfighter KZ pointed out that the tach was electric instead of cable like my KZ. Is there a way to make it work?

I think a ground wire and a wire to one of your coils.

Correct. There should be a set of wires coming out of the cluster (if you are using the whole cluster). Some will be for various lights, one should be a ground, one should be for the tach. Take that wire and connect it to the terminal of the coil that connects to the points. The other terminal will always be 12V when the switch is ON. The tach wire registers each time the points fire and sends the signal to the tach.

You guys are AWESOME! Will the cable tach mount on the head leak oil out if a cable is not connected? Maybe some kind of plug?

Cap/plug it or it will leak. I did it once, if memory serves me correct it has the same thread pattern as an O2 sensor. But it has been a while so I do not recall where I got it.

Usually 3 wires on the GPZ tach's.
One is earth, one is + power from ignition and the other goes to the LT side of one of the coils to count the sparks.
Colour coding can vary but easily worked out.
Usually red to ign +.
Black or brown earth
and black with red tracer to the LT.

It´s easier to use the complete GPZ tach and speedo unit.

Schnitz Racing has the tach drive plug that you need. store.schnitzracing.com/schnitz-tach-dri...wasaki-kz900-kz1000/

Although it does have an o-ring, a little bit of silicone sealer on the plug will guarantee no leaks. Hope this helps.

Tachometer swap. I have no idea if it can be done, but I'd guess not. at the least it won't be simple. The screw mountings may not line up & the tachometer may not fit the housing assy correctly. Opening up most KZ meters & putting them back together is kind of a pain, and afterwards the meter may not be waterproof once the glass & housing o-rings have been disturbed.

Other meters. The KZ1000P Police meters might could be used. ZRX1100/1200 meters are kind of similar to most stock KZ meters, maybe a tad fancier. The ZRX speedo is cable driven & they have an electronic tachometer >> same as the 1000P & a few other 80s models. With the ZRX or 1000P stuff you'd probably need to install the entire meter assy. this would also be kind of a pain as you'd probably need to do some meter bracket fettling or fabricating. plus some re-wiring.
