Removing the starter motor
29 Oct 2013 13:16
Hey peeps.
Here is where I am currently on the picture below. I know this is the problem, everything else is fixed/tested/good. I was told to see if I can clean the brushes before buying a new starter motor. Now That I have it opened up, I need some advice on how to take the starter out. Please and thanks!

The starter motor is the little silver cylinder at the top of the picture - the one with the black rubber boot sticking out of the side and the two long screws holding the ends together. Most of this picture is the alternator. It's normally held in place with a couple of reasonably hefty bolts. Disconnect the big black cable, undo the two bolts, and lift it out.

Here is a good link on the Twins forum for a factory service manual.
www.kz400.com/WorkshopManFrameset-5.html
It should show you how to do most everything on your bike.
Also once you have it out, the twins forum has a good write up with pictures on the motor.

Re: Removing the starter motor
29 Oct 2013 20:29Unfortunately, this method will not work with that particular engine. If you look at the rotor, it is connected via the chain to the starter motor.Cynjut wrote: The starter motor is the little silver cylinder at the top of the picture - the one with the black rubber boot sticking out of the side and the two long screws holding the ends together. Looks to me like you will have to pull the rotor first.
As Motor Head stated, the factory service manual should have the procedure detailed.

My 1st addition Kawasaki Z1 repair manual says to:
Remove starter and chain covers. Remover starter cover gasket. The chain cover is below the starter cover.
Disconnect the wire coming from the starter motor.
Remove the two starter mounting bolts.
With draw the starter from the starting mechanism.
The starter motor has a short splined shaft which fits into the mechanism. Be aware while the starter bolts look robust, they are rather soft and break pretty easy.

Re: Removing the starter motor
30 Oct 2013 13:13That is pretty much how my 750 Kaws were/are. The stater shaft, however, points toward the center of the engine on those engines. That 440, however, points outward, for whatever reason (probably because it is a twin, not a 4), and this method is incorrect.Z1Driver wrote: My 1st addition Kawasaki Z1 repair manual says to:
