Gpz750 starter motor interchange?

I need a new starter motor for my '83 Gpz750 (Zx750A) as it fried and started smoking. I cross-referenced Kaw's parts fiche and it has a part number (21163-1053) which was used on the Zx750A, Zn700, and Zr750 Zephyr. It supercedes to 21163-1222 which fits the newer Zr7's. My question is will any Kz650/750 starter motor work considering they're all based on the same engine family? I want to broaden my search criteria if possible.

Hey Doug did you ever find a starter motor to replace your fried one? i'm looking to do the same for a KZ750E

I found a 2003 Zr7 starter motor on eBay. Works just fine.
