Over charging question
01 Oct 2013 18:10 - 01 Oct 2013 18:11
I recently replaced my regulator and rectifier on my 76 kz900 with a combo unit because the old stuff crapped out. Unfortunately it still seems to be overcharging(16.8V@4krpm). The new unit has three yellow wires that go to the stator two reds that are positive(ran to the positive terminal of battery) and two green wires that are negative(to ground). Where is my problem? I could really use some advice because I don't want to fry any of my components and would really like to enjoy the last couple months of riding before snow! :(

First check all the connections you made. But I suspect you have a bad battery, have it tested. The charging system needs to have a battery in good condition to work properly.

It' a new trugel, and it tested good. Could it be the stator?

The stator is capable of making AC voltage. The Rectifier converts that to DC Voltage. The regulator is what sets the charging voltage. But it senses the voltage that is on the system and battery. You say the New Combo unit has 2 red + wires? Where are they connected? Both straight to Battery + or through another wire/ circuit?
Pictures or the connections, and the Brand/ Model of the combo unit would be great.
With 2 Red Wires and 2 Green wires, I'd check with the R/R manufacturer for proper hook up and testing/ diagnosis. I'm wondering if that is the correct one for your KZ, permanent magnet 3 phase system.
Here you find the correct one:http://oregonmotorcycleparts.com/VRRPM.html

Since you are seeing 16.8 volts the stator is working. Ed

1976 KZ900
Combo R&R unit....
EDIT: I'm with Motor Head on the 2 red conductors to the Battery doesn't make sense...
In this case, you'd have no load thus possibly higher Vdc output!
Same time, as already mentioned definitely confirm with the manufacturer...
As in my combo unit (Z1 Ent), Should be the following,
3 conductors to Dynamo (yellow)
1 conductor to the ignition switch output(red or brown)
1 conductor to the battery (white) add in line 10amp fuse!
1 conductor to ground (Black)

Great diagrams thanks.I figured it out this morning. Had a similar problem to this with an old shovelhead that i recalled last night, new regulator still overcharging. Ended up being the stator was going bad. She is running and charging perfectly now. Thanks for the input guys.
