easiest way to convert to kick only? was created by Plug.ugly
I have a 79 Kz400 that seems to come factory without kick at all. I'd like to convert it to kick start only, but I'm not really sure how to go about this. Any and all advice will help, thanks.

I won't say impossible but if that motor never came with kick it will be tough. Did other years of this motor have a kicker?

put a worn out starter solenoid on that only works if you tap on it
then just wire it up so its around where the back brake peddle is
then hold the starter button down and kick away at the old worn out solenoid
until it starts. you will feel way cooler then you do now
and get way more pussy

Actually, according to Kawasaki.com every year and model KZ400 came with a kickstarter as standard equipment. Maybe he has a different engine in the bike (KZ440?) and doesn't know it. ;) Ed

Yep, all 400s came with kick start. Some were even kick start only. Take a look
at the front of the cylinder block. On the bottom, towards the center. It will tell
you the original cc. I bet it's a 440, none came with a kick start. You can convert
to kick start, but you have to split the cases. Use either a true '79 - "80 KZ400
kick start mechanism or use the earlier KZ400s kick start mechanism with
both first gears. Shafts are the same spline, the teeth are different and the gears
are a different width. You will also need the "79-"80 clutch cover. There is one bolt
that is in a different place from the earlier cover and the 440 doe not have the hole
machined for the seal.

Wow, ok. I'll have to look into that. Thanks. Definitely looking forward to all that pussy though, I mean why else would I want a kickstart?
