MFolks,thanks a lot.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

KZ igniters use a ground wire for ground, not necessarily the backing plate.

Thank you all, after a good cleaning I am now getting battery voltage at the ignition coils.

It really does not take much corrosion to lower voltage and current sources for the ignition system. I'd suggest cleaning the many and various electrical connectors & switches at least every other year(especially if you live in a salt air environment, like a beach city).

I have not been to the bike in a couple of weeks, fixed voltage to the coils, and now she wont turn over. I cleaned and painted battery holder box, reattached ic igniter along with all the other components, and now it wont start. Solenoids tested 3.5 ohms resistance at plug. Solenoid is not getting power at the plug, when clutch is engaged and starter button is pushed. I ordered a factory repair manual finally, however any ideas on where to look for fault will be appreciated. Forgot to mention, I have power at the ignition switch and starter button.

Disregard this post as I figured out where the problem was using a Kawasaki KZ750 1980-1983 clymer manual. I used the blue print that I could read and the fault was at the starter disconnect switch. MFolks, thanks again.

Would determine and resolve voltage loss between battery and coils.

Good Fortune! :)

Great diagram! On the above, for my bike, where does the integrated voltmeter (on the tach gauge) get its reading? I'm seeing 10.75 volts at the coils, at the ignition coil connector near the rear brake and also on the integrated voltmeter.

I've gone through about every connector with deoxit so far but haven't done the ignition switch or run/kill switch yet.

Also the pickup coil wire readings at the igniter were all infinite so looks like my igniter is bad too.

Thanks!

Here's a link to download the wiring diagram found in KZr's FILEBASE:
www.kzrider.com/filebase/search/finish/1-general/265-kz750f1

If not already done, would assure that the black/yellow wire is providing a good ground from the igniter.

Good Fortune! :)

Thank you! I think I recall the black/yellow grounded at a metal strip right under the seat, I'll check tomorrow.
