Pickup coils Z750 on a GPZ750 engine
14 Sep 2013 15:16
Hello,
I'm Matthijs from the Netherlands and I'm a newby on this forum.
I'm busy rebuilding a KZ750E, when I bought the bike, the engine was seriously broken, so I managed to arrange a GPZ750 engine. The engine is already in the KZ750E frame and everything fits amazingly well. I want to use the old KZ750E wiring instead of the GPZ wiring. Is it possible to fit the KZ750 pickup on the GPZ engine and will it work? I'm btw using the orginal CDI unit of KZ750E.
Many thanks in advance for helping me out!
Kind regards,
Matthijs

Yes. I've done it. I fit a KZ550 pickup plate and advancer onto a gpz750 and it worked (with the KZ550 igniter module).

Ok, thanks! So it's a simple "bolt-on" job?

Welcome Matthijs.
Yes, bolt on and wire up.
I'm using a mix of 650, 750 and 1000 electronic ignition parts on my '78 kz650 that originally came with a points ignition.
Also from the Netherlands, Amersfoort, but now living in Canada.

Ha Rob,
Wat grappig!
I'll try it tomorrow (if I can get my hands on a pneumatic impact wrench), I think it impossible to losen the rotor without a impact wrench..
Bedankt voor je reactie Rob!

Which rotor are you trying to loosen?
If your trying to loosen the rotor on the end of the engine's crankshaft, the stator's rotor, the rear axle can be threaded into the rotor, then whack the end of the axle and the rotor should come loose/off.

The timing rotor should not need an air impact. There are two nuts, The larger one is keyed to base of the rotor which is keyed to the crank. Don't use an impact on that. It will shear off. It is not meant to be turned. It is what you use to hold the crank while you un-screw the smaller bolt, which holds the advancer mechanism on to the crank.

Yes, you are right! Didn't see that. Got the rotor/pickups off and installed the KZ ones. The bike runs!
Thank you for your help!

Thank you,
The next challenge is to find out what chain lenght I need with my GPZ750 rear wheel and GPZ750 sprocket (in Z750 swingarm) and GPZ engine (also with original sprocket) Already found out that I can't use a Z750 or GPZ chain...

Here's useful information, the first is drive chain calculation, and the second is a way to figure the drive ratio:
