Cracked ignition coil... JB Weld? was created by guitargeek
Like it says in the title, I have a coil with some cracks in the housing. Both coils read within spec, can I just patch it with epoxy? Maybe heat it first to displace any moisture that might've gotten in?

Anybody have experience with this?

I'm going on a long trip soon, I think I'll buy a used coil, epoxy this cracked one and bring it as a spare.

Problem with used coils for 30 year old bikes is that they are 30 years old too. Guess how I learned about that.....

Coils do not age well.

I have the Dyna coils on my bike from the one that was wrecked. They crack easily if the ignition is left on. When I had the wreck I couldn't get to the bike to turn the ignition off and had to wait for the first person to reach me to ask him to turn the key off.

The coils perform well.

I had stock coils on the bike and it would run but after installing the cracked coils it starts and runs much better. I would not repair a old stock coil.

A coil is actually a high voltage flyback transformer. They rely on the potting material to keep air out. If air is present, you get corona that destroys the insulating material. Eventually, you get arc over and catastrophic failure. Coils are subject to the trifecta of what destroys all electrical/electronic components:

Heat
Voltage
Vibration

It's surprising they live as long as they do.
