Fuse Question was created by JR
About 10 days ago I was doing some maintenance on the bike. Ignition off, on centre stand, seat up. I dropped a spring which lodged between and touching the the battery positive terminal and the helmet lock causing a short. I only noticed it a few seconds later when I smelled smoke as the hot spring started melting the top of the battery. I quickly removed the spring (burning some finger tips in the process) and all was well.I fired up the bike and rode it several time in the next week without any problem.
My question is - could this cause the main fuse to melt or almost melt ? All my fuses are ATO spade type

The reason I ask is that last Saturday I rode about 2 blocks from home and suddenly all the electrics went dead. Main fuse was blown and some of the fuse plastic melted. I popped in a spare and rode home. Today I spent several hours going through the electrics - all handlebar switches, the rats nest in the headlight bucket, all wiring under the seat etc etc and I have not found any sign of a short. I didn't open the main harness or get to the connectors to the regulator'/rectifier. With my digital meter set to Amps and plugged into where the fuse goes the max current drawn with engine running, full headlight on, 4 way flashers going a brake light on is about 12 amp.
I just cant figure out why the fuse blew. Didn't think the accident with the spring would do it as the ignition was off but then electrics was never my strong point

I think it was fluke the fuse blew, when the spring dropped, there was no fuse in the circuit. You may have had a weak fuse, and it blew for whatever reason. As you've seen the current draw with your multimeter, it does not approach the main fuse rating.
