The Dyna "S" works better with 3 ohm coils. If what the PO tests at 3 ohms, you're probably good. The stock coils used 1/4" wide electrical push on connectors, but the Dyna and Accel coils need ring terminals. They can short out, blowing the fuse, as the mounting spacers come real close to the primary(small wires)side of the coils. Many riders who change the coils use a Nylon spacer in the place of the metal one.

So how do I find out if stock coils are 3 ohms??? I have a harbor freight multi-meter that should measure resistance.

If the stock coils are 3 ohms, or higher, and they are in good shape, they will work just as well.

03 Sep 2013 16:40You will get a lot of measurement error at 3 Ohms. Measure the leads alone and subtract that from the coil reading.uglee wrote: So how do I find out if stock coils are 3 ohms??? I have a harbor freight multi-meter that should measure resistance.

I have a brand new in box dyna coil that came with my bike....But I wanna get the coils to match before I swap it all out to make sure I have the right gear, and to hopefully really notice a difference...Good Luck!

For the most part, points ignitions use 5 Ohm coils, electronic ignitions use 3 Ohm coils.
You can use 5 Ohm coils with the Dyna S, but the spark will not be as hot.

07 Sep 2013 00:31It depends on the dwell and coil's inductance, not just current.koolaid_kid wrote: For the most part, points ignitions use 5 Ohm coils, electronic ignitions use 3 Ohm coils.
You can use 5 Ohm coils with the Dyna S, but the spark will not be as hot.
Higher resistance coils usually also have higher inductance. With higher inductance, under certain conditions, the coils can store more energy than lower-resistance/inductance coils.
Higher inductance means the coils are "slower", meaning slower to charge. If you give them enough time to charge, they may end up storing more total energy than the "faster" coils.
Since the Dyna S gives a really long dwell, the slower coils will likely have more spark energy at idle, and the difference at higher RPMs may be negligible.
