Here's a reply by someone over at the KawasakiMotorcycle.org site:
I found a really good locksmith. He looked up the code on the back of the helmet hook/seat lock. It took him a while but, $22 later, Voila! Two new keys...

I found the code in several places; the bottom of the ignition switch, the seat lock and the helmet holder lock.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for this, just after starting my 1980 KZ550A restoration project, I misplaced the one key that came with the bike. Found this forum post and after working with a locksmith and pulling the helmet lock... there was no serial number, just a smooth black surface... as I was putting it back in, a chunk of the grease/dirt/creosote fell off revealing the key code. So, after a minute of scrubbing we got the whole thing and had keys in hand by the end of the day.
Side note mentioned by the locksmith, "A lot of vintage bike owners that have the original owners manual will jot down the key code in the manual for future owners or in case you lose the key."
