Condenser Failure?
11 Aug 2013 11:41
Bike has been running great all summer, Points were pitted so I cleaned them up to finish the riding season and used my new condenser about 3 months ago. Well last night I barely made it home. Open up the points cover and it looks like a fireworks show.
Installed the new points that finally came in and still sparking on the contact faces like mad. Condenser appears to be bad. Do they fail because of pitted faces or did I just get a bad one in the set?

You should replace the condenser every time you replace the points. That's normal tune-up procedure. Ed

My recommendation would check to make sure your condenser leads are connected to the points properly. Sparking points are an indication of a bad condenser or condenser leads touching something they should not be. Last time I had this issue, one of the condenser leads was placed on the wrong side of a fiber washer on the points. HTH, Z1Driver

If you have the money to upgrade to an electronic system i would do that. Points do work, and can be fixed on the side of the road. But the electronic systems that Kawi made in the 80's is very reliable. You should be able to retrofit it to your model very reasonable. Then set it and just lube the advancer during regular maintenance.

Well, I want a dyna or boyer, but right now after a 10,000 km bike trip for our honeymoon funds are tight. Figured 30 bucks for 2 condensers so I have a set as a spare aint to shabby.
Condenser leads were good. Bike ran great for about 3 months. cylinder 2-3 was the one sparking horribly.
