plug wires?

Can your spark plug wires be too long? should they be trimmed short and tight fit?

Not really, there is no problem running them either short or long as long as they fit. I run mine with a little slack that way if I have to cut an end off and re-splice I still have some to work with.

Don't have them too long, as they may flop in the breeze, breaking the inner conductors, making for real fun troubleshooting.
