78 KZ650 B2... in pieces for now...
No start...need ignition help! was created by kawa650kz
So, a few months ago I left the key turned on, and afterwards the bike would not start even after the battery was removed and recharged. Prior to charging the battery and reinstalling it, I also changed out the handlebars. Starter turns over, and even when kicking, I get no spark at any of the plugs. I have 12V power on the positive side at both coils. I checked the points, cleaned and gapped them. They are "sparking", and I get power from the wires off the condensor (pulsing) right up to the coil. Not a harness issue. With this being said, unless the coils are defective, I should be getting a spark, right??? I replaced the coils with a set off of another kz650 that were supposedly tested and working fine, and still nothing with these coils. I don't want to buy another set of coils if I don't need to, but not being an electrical expert, I am not sure where to look next. Would I need to try replacing the condensors? I would think not, but any suggestions/help would be appreciated. I do not have a multimeter, just fyi. thanks in advance for your responses!

Leaving the key on, with a points and condenser set up. Will fry the points, if closed. Otherwise if open, the points don't fry. So I'd do a simple scratch test. Take the wire from the points off of the coil. The take another jumper wire, hook it to the coil in place of the points wire. Scratch it along the engine block, and with the key on you should see blue spark at the plugs. The points are the ground side to charge up the coil, once ungrounded then it will/ should fire across the plugs.
