Blew a fuse Kz650 B-2 was created by bluej58
Fired up the bike last night for the first time after the rebuild and she ran for about 5 mins. before we blew the 20 amp fuse to the white wire.

So that's my second project for this morning.

I know it goes to the ignition and then I get confused , any tips as to where to look ?

thanks,

JD

Look down in the middle box at the bottom of the diagram, labeled IGNITION SWITCH CONNECTIONS.
The far left column is labeled OFF ON PARK.
When the ignition switch is ON, the White goes to the Brown wire.
Now go to the top, slightly left of center, a circle labeled Ignition Switch. The Brown wire is at the center bottom of the circle. It goes straight down, through a connector, then ends at a junction (the small circle where brown wires go left and right). That is the path of the electricity that you need to trace, with all its branches.
I would start at that connector near the ignition switch and head on out from there. You are looking for a short to ground. Get your multimeter out, set it to Ohms, and have a ball.
Best of luck.

It also goes to the Orange/Green wire. Between the Brown and Or/Grn, it feeds almost everything that needs voltage on your bike. Because it didn't blow immediately, you're not going to immediately find a direct short. You said it didn't blow for 5 minutes. Think about what you did right before it blew. Did you start using the turn signals, horn, brake(lights)ect...? Those are all switched circuits and a short may not cause a problem until you "switch" them into the circuit. If you can isolate which one is causing the problem by use, you'll save yourself a bunch of time tracing with a meter.

Hey, JD, doing good.
As MDZ1 stated, that also goes to the O/G.
When troubleshooting this kind of stuff, I usually gravitate toward connectors first. Personally, I suspect something overheated and eventually melted a wire.
Upon further inspection, you'll want to check out these areas:
Brown wire:
Front and rear brake light switches, and of course, the brake light bulb itself.
Neutral indicator
Horn
O/Gr wire:
Turn signal relay
Hazard relay

Good luck.

OK I'm pretty brain dead when it comes to electrical stuff so when you say "looking for the short to ground"

That means if I'm touching a brown wire or a orange/green wire with the red lead off the ohm meter and grounding to something with the black lead off the ohm meter, if the needle jumps I found the short ?

Because if that is the case my problem is forward of the big cluster under the tank .

Find a good ground point and put your black lead there. Touch various places on the brown wire. It should read greater than zero I just checked a taillight bulb and it was around 3 Ohms. If it gets anywhere near 0-1 there is a short somewhere around there. You have connectors that you can unplug to isolate to a particular area of the harness.

I'm getting confused again

So I should show some kind of voltage between the brown and ground.

I thought that would show a short ???

I have the meter set on RX1

I found you a small tutorial on using your multimeter for your testing: resistance tutorial
Basically you set the meter to Ohms (looks like an upside down horseshoe). If your meter is not autoranging it has various numbers, so set it to the smallest value to run your tests (usually 20 or 200).
If you are still confused you can call me at 317.345.1193

If chasing a problem with Ohm's testing. Un-hook the battery, so you don't put power through the meter when on OHM's.

Hows the connections at the Main Fuse, which is the one that popped? Got some good pictures of the fuse box, main fuse area, wires back a few inches?
Lots of older bikes have damaged fuse box wiring/ clips from loose fitting fuses building heat. Hows yours?
