help with speedometer and tachometer installation
04 Jul 2013 15:46
i recently bought a 1977 kz1000A customized with kerker 4into1 exhaust , k&n pod filters, drag bars, custom seat and HID headlight. i believe the wiring was changed and different terminals used. the bike didn't come with a speedometer and tachometer so i bought one from dimecitycycles. how would i mount them on and where do i connect the wires?

I have no idea how you are going to mount the aftermarket speedo, you're going to have to figure that out. The stock gages mount in a bracket that is then rubber mounted in the holes on each side of the ignition switch.

I was thinking about getting rubber inserts for each hole and get some bolts + nuts to mount it on

I think the wires are just backlight. Not 100% sure but they definitely require the speedo/tach cables which I already have. What rubber inserts do you think would work?

im guessing its just for lighting in that case open your headlight run the wires into there splice the ground into the yellow/black and the positive to i believe brown is a constant power with key or if you want it with the rest of the lights you will have to find the correct color for that but i believe the brown is the best option. at least thats the colors on my 1980 kz1000 should be the same for you

local hardware store find thick rubber grommets that fit the wholes with a set of large washers and nuts and bolts that are the correct length and size to fit the grommet. washers need to be big so it keeps it from coming out.

In my opinion you bought the wrong gauges but they will still work. I would have bought the 1:4 tach ratio and the 60kmh = 1400RPM speedo. Either way the accuracy is slightly off with these as well.

I think Z1 Enterprises sold the rubber mounts at one time, try looking there.

Gut an original OEM cluster kit (designed for speedo/tach drive cables)....
Mount as original designed to top tree (holes)...
Or use the top tree hole mounts with some flat plate drilled for mounting the 2 new gauges.
Or just get some basic handle bar mounts readily available on the web...
Use your imagination for how you desire it to look, you'll figure it out...
As for the two power conductors (+12Vdc and ground), after the switched ignition switch for gauge illuminations.
