How to Mount Aftermarket Coils?? was created by 79MKII
Hello All,

It's been so long since I've done this....how can I mount my Andrews coils to my '78 KZ1000? The bolt spread is just a bit wider than the factory coil mounts. I don't want to drill the frame. It seems like I'd have to build some type of adapter....just looking for some ideas. Thanks!

I had these on my MKII years ago but can't remember how I did it.

Get some Aluminum angles and flat straps & fabricate a mounting adapter. If you can find a forum member "Martin CSR" he can probably help with the dimensions needed.I'd suggest using self locking nuts for the coils, and the mounting brackets, as motorcycles have a lot of vibration.

The 78 KZ1000 coil mounts are different from the 81 650-CSR & I mounted Dyna coils.
The photo below is a prototype of the brackets I ended up making from 1-1/2" angle aluminum from the HomeDepot. The coil mounting holes are offset from the top holes, which moved the coils towards the front of the bike to allow better clearance for the plug wire towers (I have mine facing towards the rear - the clearance was better).

Here are a few topics w photos - not sure if any of them will be applicable - searched KZR for mounting Dyna coils.

Thanks for the ideas guys. So the bracket is at a 90 deg angle....are the coils mounted horizontally then?

The Dynas bolt right up on my frame but I already had these Andrews coils and would like to use them if possible.

Hey, when did we get spell check on this forum?? Just noticed it! :cheer:

Keep in mind that I have an 81 650 & the coils mount differently than your bike. I've got the Dyna coils mounted w the plug wire towers facing down & towards the rear of the bike - very similar to the way clutch did it on his 750. ( dyna-coil-mounting-help ) By using the aluminum angle bar, I was able to tuck the coils up close to the frame & move them forward a little for better fitment.

For the record, here's what I ended up making. It seems to work pretty well and will hopefully hold up over time. The bracket mounts to the stock forward coil mounting holes. The front coil bolts mount to the bracket and the rear coil bolts mount in the stock rear location.
