Starter is turning but not catching... was created by Jayavarman
I'm new to motorcycle and bought a 77 KZ650B1, I cleaned the carbs and got it to run even with the bad starter. Use the kick start? The lever is broken and there will be another forum for that. I was jw... since I don't know the schematic of this bike, if I could fix it without pulling the engine out. I'm sure the gear is worn out.

Thanks

Is it the electric starter that is spinning and not catching?
If so, it is probably a bad starter clutch, they are a weak point.
I just had to replace mine because when it was hot it wouldn't always grab.
If you search starter clutch you will find lots of info from others who have already done the job, it can be done in chassis, but I found it easy enough to take the engine out.

Did you remove the starter clutch? if you did not torque it enough the bolt won't hold the clutch and it will spin instead of turning the engine.

With the stator cover off. Use a socket to hold the starter gear in place, and tap the starter. see what happens.

He has a 650, not a 900/1000/1100, and they are different, the starter clutch on a 650/750 four is on a secondary shaft inside the motor, and the starter mounts behind the cylinders. You have to get at it through the oil pan.

There's another thread (by mbsween) that has pics of him replacing the starter clutch while in the chassis. Might be easier than pulling the motor.

FOUND IT !!

i have this same problem but I found a way to prolong the replacement of the starter clutch. Chances are only a portion of the clutch is bad ie one spring/roller or a couple worn cohs on the sprocket. Put the bike in 1st gear and roll it forward the little amount it will let you and try again. If that doesnt work put the bike into second or 3rd gear and do the same. I bet it starts...
