73 Z1 No Spark Dyna S Pickups was created by Yorkie
Newbie to the KZ forum. Just picked up an early Z1 that does not run. It's fitted with a Dyna S ignition pickups and I am not getting any spark at all. I think it's correctly wired as the red wire is spliced into the yellow/red wire and the other two wires to the coils. I am not sure that the bike has ever ran with this setup so could anyone guide me through a troubleshooting process? I have a multi meter but electrics are a bit of a mystery to me.
Thanks
Kevin

Check Dyna's website. They have trouble shooting docs there, used to anyway.

Check the supplied "Splice" that Dyna uses for the power source, as it can allow corrosion at this connection. The best way is to use solder, and then cover it with heatshrink tubing.

Follow the guide for "Static", will tell you if pickups are operating correctly.

Confirm/measure Red (red/yellow) is ~ 12Vdc -> 13.5Vdc when ignition switch turned on.

I seem to see/hear a lot of guys having trouble with those. Glad I stuck witness points.

the vast majority of Dyna-S failures are caused by the bikes charging system.

Bad battery, bad regulator, or margin wiring - all can cause high or low voltage spikes.

With many of the electronic ignitions, not only is high voltage bad, but low voltage is as well.

It's well worth checking the regulator to ensure it's working.

It's also worth checking the voltage at the coils - with older harnesses on bikes that've been sitting for years, the corrosion on various contacts in connector blocks, ignition and kill switches limit the voltage. If the coils are only getting 10v, then the ignition is going to as well.

Running the bike with a bad battery can also cause the charging system to constantly push more voltage through the electrical system and damage the ignitions.

Jeff the battery may well have been his issue
as he did have a marginal battery for a while.

Had really good luck for 23 years with my 1st Dyna set up so that's why I'm going to trust em with a second. One of the pick ups blew on mine for some reason and I hope the problem is not still there waiting to get the next one.

Been running the points for several years now and have no spark after a re build so its back to a new Dyna for me.
