See if the bike has a small switch on the clutch lever. Most Kawasaki's have this as a safety device, to prevent starting the engine with it in gear(as it might take off if the engine starts). The switch should go to wiring in the headlight.

The 79 KZ750B definitely has the clutch "lockout" switch that disables the starter circuitry when the clutch lever is not pulled in. That switch would have to be "jumpeed" to get the starter to work.

This is the exact diagram I have been following. I do have that clutch switch tied in correctly. I don't see where the push button/ engine switch grounds? I know on other projects I had issues with proper ground... could this be the problem here as well?

The push button does not ground. It sends 12v to the starter solenoid's coil. The other end of the solenoid's coil is grounded.

The 12v goes to the solenoid's coil via a black wire, then solenoid's other connection is grounded via a yellow/red wire to the main ground wire.

That answers that question, I am at a loss for what to do. I have all that wired correctly. It has to be something dumb, the bike operated flawlessly in the fall when I stripped it for the hardtail.

Well boys thanks for all the input but I discovered a problem. I unwrapped the ground wire coming off the battery, where there is also a wire tied in to ground the starter and found 2 strands of the stranded wire still connected. I reckon those 2 strands werent offering enough ground. I will pick up a new connecter tomorow and hopefully have knees in the breeze very soon.
