This is 1000% correct....just happened to me and it sucked. I chased my tail around for quite a while......:ohmy:
Check batt post
Battery cable
Wire harness gound pigtail from negitive battery led and connections....this is where I had a problem.
It you check your turn signal wires for 12volt and you have 12volts there....you have a main ground fault. I was getting 12 volts to all my stuff but they wouldnt fuction....

And can anybody tell me what the small black wire coming from the left side of the bike (just to the left of the fuse box) running over to the battery is for?

When I upgraded to LED bulbs I had to get a no load flasher unit. That unit had a little wire on it that wasn't on the OEM flasher. It needed to be connected to ground for the blinkers to blink. Maybe yours came loose?
