Opinions on a new starter motor... was created by LuckyLucOnBass
I'm working on an 83 KZ550. I got it to fire up a few weeks ago. Then it would only click the solenoid. The solenoid worked, but was in bad shape. I replaced it with a new solenoid for self assurance. I still wasn't getting power out of the starter. But power was definitely making it there. I took out the starter and jump it to a battery charger. It didn't spin unless I started it with my hand. Even then, it whined and screeched.

So I took it apart and sure enough it was worse than I thought. The bushing were completely burned to a crisp. A ton of ash poured out too.

Needless to say, I need a new starter. I read on another post to use a Honda Mitsuba SM-220 starter. What's everyone's opinion on that? Do you use them? Other options are buying a rebuild kit, a used starter, a rebuilt starter, or a close to OEM starter. I'm leaning to the Honda starter.

Thanks,

The Mitsuba may not fit your bike, as I've advised Kz1000 and Kz1100 owners that it will fit their bikes. Look here for possible rebuild kits and replacement starter motors:

You were right, it did not fit. I borrowed one from a friend. The mounting bolts were too wide.

I'll go with a rebuild kit for now. For $18, it's worth a try.
