KZ400 Complete shutdown was created by Duckhole
Hi, I was at a red light and my bike just shutdown completely. I was wondering what a few things I could check before I pay someone to look at it. What would cause the motor and all electrical components to stop?

Clean up the Fuse Clips, and make sure they hold the fuse tight. If you have a Volt meter, check for a drop in Voltage across the Fuse. If there is, it is Dirty/ Loose. Then it will heat up again, and come loose at the cap like that one. If it blows out at the small metal strip inside the fuse, then its a Short in the wiring.

I've been able to get home by just connecting the two half moon ends together sans fuse. Beats walking...

But you risk melting the wiring harness.

+1 ! Especially if you have not identified the problem that caused the fuse to blow. It could be anything from simply a faulty fuse to a dead short in one of the high-current circuits. If the latter, it may actually start a fire in the harness. Be careful. Ed

FYI, glass tube fuses should be thrown away and replaced every couple of years. They do go bad and blow at the worst times. I carry some in the tail section of my bike. I blew a main fuse one day when I stepped on the brake, there was no wiring problem the fuse just went away.

True. You have to be careful. In my case it was obvious the glass fuse was the culprit since it was in pieces.
