Low Fuel Light On, Fuel Level Sensor?

22 Jan 2013 12:05

My low fuel light is constantly on, the PO changed the relay (I think that's what it is) since the one in there looks new and there is an old one in a box of stuff he gave me. My guess is that the sensor has gone bad. It appears that it is some sort of thermistor that cools off with fuel. Is it reparaible, or do I need to get the assembly, if so, what's the part number? Thanks, AL

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Take a look at the "Fuel Tank" diagram.

I don't know if there might be a bench-test procedure, or as to any failing that might be repairable. And don't have an FSM for possible reference.

Good Fortune! :)

I appreciate the links and info. I hate to have to take 80 bucks out of my bike budget to make that little red light go away. Not sure what could fail in that unit but the thermistor.

Hey Guys, since I don't know when the fuel is low, how many miles should I expect before going into reserve. I'll just reset the odo with every fill.

Does the low fuel warning lite also function as the brake indicator lite? If so, I'd check the owner's manual to see how yours is supposed to function. Try disconnecting the low fuel switch to see if the switch is the problem - I think that will work. I would also check the rear brake light switch adjustment.

If your fuel valve has a reserve setting, a way to figure out how far you can go is to fill up the tank, then ride the bike until it starts to sputter. Note the mileage & switch to RES. Bring along a gallon of fuel. Then ride it until it is out of fuel. Note the RES mileage.

Everything is good, the thermistor went out. I'll just read miles until it goes into reserve. Was hoping for someone to give me a ballpark number.

What is the size of the tank on the SR? 5 gallon with .5 reserve? What's normal MPGs for the 650...25?

Here is another dumb question, Is the brake light supposed to come on if you depress the front brake only? Mine only comes on when depressing the rear brake.

The rear brake light is supposed to shine during application of either brake.

Might be a faulty front brake switch, or maybe a connection came loose at the front brake switch, or perhaps a wiring issue within the harness.

Would also take a look at the wiring diagram in KZrider's FILEBASE.

Good Fortune! :)

The brake indicator lite should come on when either brake is applied - the Rr brake light should come on as well. I'm assuming your SR indicator lite functions similar to the 81 KZ650. Check the om.

I'd guess the SR tank is ~4 gals. I suppose any KZ650 should get at least 42 mpgs. My CSR typically gets 45-48 mpgs, but 52 is possible out in the country if I ride conservatively. The best thing to do is figure out your actual miles per gallon.
