I've upgrade old cars in the past to electronic ignition since it's painless. Is it worth upgrading the KZ? It's about 130 bucks to do so with a brand called Dyna S.

the dyna is easy....folks here can trouble shoot any swap probs you might hit...it is very easy to switch and in theory you set it with a timing gun and ...never have to mess with it ever...check here with members on wether your coils work with it..some stock kawasaki coils will/can fry at some point with the dyna set ups....members here with 650 info can better answer this point...most folks run a dyna s with dyna coils and auto store wires or some type of wire and cap with dyna coils

You also can upgrade using the electronic ignition parts from a newer KZ model. I did that to my 650, using a system from an early 80's 750. It might have cost me $75 buying the parts off ebay.

Have fun riding instead of setting points and timing, I sure have!

You can do the above if your on a really tight budget but I have a hard time trusting older electrnics that are exposed to heat and vibration for over 30 years. If you can afford it go with the Dyna S.

I am also useing an electronic ignition from a newer model KZ.
Only did it because at the time I could not afford the Dyna, again.
I had a Dyna S fry on me.
Went back to points for a while.
I found KZ electronic bits at a reasonable cost, some years back, before the rise in current prices of all things on ebay.

Keep in mind, if you give up points for electronic ignition, it's your fault that the bike won't start after experiencing the EMP from a nuclear explosion. :P

Dyna-S works great. Uses more power than the stock system, but no problem. Stock coils work fine. I don't even know or care the ohms of the stock coils, but they work fine with the Dyna. My old 78 KZ650 has over 150,000 on the Dyna setup with stock coils.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I'd say that would qualify as a pretty good long term test of the Dyna and the stock coils! Ed
